* Daft Punk by Hedi Slimane - From Dior Homme to Saint Laurent2005-2014

For almost a decade Hedi Slimane dressed, scored and photographed the two anonymous robots of French electronic music, from black leather at Dior Homme to sequined tuxedos at Saint Laurent.

On 1 October 2012, at the Grand Palais in Paris, the guests at Hedi Slimane’s first womenswear show for Saint Laurent waited under a black ceiling. Before any model appeared, the ceiling split into panels and a row of speakers and lights descended, while a strobe show ran to a new piece of music. After the sound collapsed into glitch, Julia Nobis walked out in a wide-brimmed hat, a narrow jacket and a pussy-bow blouse. The soundtrack lasted fifteen minutes and was built from the blues of Junior Kimbrough. The programme credited it simply: “Music: Junior Kimbrough, edited by Daft Punk.” It was the second chapter of a working relationship that had begun seven years earlier at Dior Homme.

Two kinds of anonymity

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had hidden their faces behind robot helmets since the end of the 1990s. “We don’t want all the rock’n’roll poses and attitudes,” Bangalter said in 1997. Slimane, for his part, rarely gave interviews and built his houses around a silhouette rather than his own image. Both were French, both worked from music, and both used a uniform to remove the individual. What changed over the years was the uniform.

Dior Homme: black leather, 2005–2007

The first look Slimane designed for the duo dates from 2005, the year of their third album, “Human After All”. At Dior Homme he dressed them in black leather biker jackets, closely cut, with ribbed leather panels on the sleeves and cuffs. They replaced the earlier space suits and tracksuits and gave the robots a harder, rock silhouette that matched the minimal, distorted sound of the record.

The jackets became the costume of the Alive 2006/2007 tour, which opened in April 2006 at the Coachella festival in California. The duo played inside an illuminated pyramid. For the stage, the jackets carried logos that lit up. The live album “Alive 2007” was recorded at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in June 2007. The tour changed the reception of “Human After All”, which critics had dismissed in 2005, and fixed the image of the two leather-clad robots at the top of the pyramid.

Slimane left Dior Homme in 2007. The collaboration stopped while he worked as a photographer in Los Angeles.

Saint Laurent: the soundtrack, 2012

When he returned to the house as creative director in 2012, Slimane asked Daft Punk for the music of his debut. Instead of their own synthesisers, they looped and edited the recordings of Junior Kimbrough, a Mississippi hill-country blues musician who had died in 1998, built around “I Gotta Try You Girl”. The fifteen-minute mix was released online the same week. It became part of the Saint Laurent Music Project, through which Slimane commissioned musicians for his shows and photographed them for the house’s campaigns.

“He designed a silhouette for two bodies without faces.”

Saint Laurent: sequins, 2013

In April 2013, a month before the release of their fourth album, “Random Access Memories”, Daft Punk joined the Music Project. Slimane photographed them in black and white, against a white background, wearing their helmets and black sequined tuxedos. The suits came from the house’s permanent collection and reworked Le Smoking, the tuxedo Yves Saint Laurent had designed for women in 1966. The duo had moved from biker leather to evening wear.

The sequined jackets ran through the whole album campaign. They appeared in the television spot for “Get Lucky”, the single with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, broadcast during “Saturday Night Live” in April 2013. For the June 2013 issue of Dazed & Confused, Slimane photographed and styled the duo with Giorgio Moroder, whose voice narrates “Giorgio by Moroder” on the album, for a cover story shot in Los Angeles. In January 2014, at the 56th Grammy Awards at the Staples Center, the two robots collected five awards, including Album of the Year, in white Saint Laurent outfits.

What the clothes did

The two looks followed the two records. The leather jackets of 2005 belonged to the hard, repetitive electronics of “Human After All” and the Alive tour. The tuxedos of 2013 belonged to “Random Access Memories”, an album recorded with live session musicians and built on disco, soft rock and the studio craft of the 1970s. In each case Slimane did not dress two personalities. He designed a silhouette for two bodies without faces, and the helmets turned the clothes into the only visible expression of the group.

The leather biker look also returned in his own collections. The studded and narrow leather jackets of his Saint Laurent menswear continued the line he had first drawn for the robots at Dior Homme.

In February 2021 Daft Punk announced their split with “Epilogue”, a scene from their 2006 film “Electroma”. In the desert, one of the two robots takes off his leather jacket to reveal a self-destruct mechanism, and the other activates it.

Dior Homme: pelle nera, 2005–2007
