* Daft Punk by Hedi Slimane - From Dior to Saint Laurent2006-2013
The visual identity of Daft Punk was shaped for over a decade by the French designer Hedi Slimane. The collaboration between the electronic duo and the designer spanned two major fashion houses, transitioning from leather outerwear to tailored formalwear. Their working relationship was built on a documented personal friendship and shared references in art and music.
In 2006, during his tenure as creative director of Dior Homme, Slimane designed bespoke stage clothing for Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The duo replaced their previous costumes with black leather biker jackets. These garments featured studded high collars, ribbed panels, heavy metal zippers, and the Daft Punk logo spelled out in studs across the back.
The Dior Homme leather suits debuted in April 2006 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, worn inside the duo's pyramid stage structure. Daft Punk retained these Slimane designs for the entirety of the 2006–2007 Alive world tour. The live album “Alive 2007” was recorded during their performance at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, with the duo performing in the Dior Homme jackets.
When Slimane was appointed creative director of Yves Saint Laurent in 2012, the collaboration continued. For Slimane’s debut womenswear show in October 2012, Daft Punk produced the runway soundtrack. The fifteen-minute mix was built around the guitar and vocals of American blues musician Junior Kimbrough.
Ahead of the release of their 2013 album “Random Access Memories”, Slimane photographed the duo for the Saint Laurent Music Project campaign. Shot in black and white by Slimane, the images featured Daft Punk holding a transparent lucite guitar and bass. They wore custom Saint Laurent “Le Smoking” tuxedos covered entirely in black sequins.
These sequined tuxedos became the defining visual uniform for the “Random Access Memories” press cycle and public appearances. That same spring, Slimane styled and photographed Daft Punk alongside Italian producer Giorgio Moroder for the June 2013 cover story of “Dazed & Confused” magazine.
Through his work at Dior Homme and Saint Laurent, Slimane established a consistent silhouette for the duo's anonymous public personas. The physical transition from heavy leather jackets to tailored sequined tuxedos mirrored their musical shift from the aggressive electronics of “Alive 2007” to the live studio instrumentation of “Random Access Memories”.
