Raf Simons is a Belgian fashion designer whose work merges the exact construction of traditional menswear with the visual codes of teenage subcultures. Trained in industrial and furniture design, his approach applies strict control of proportion, sequencing, and spatial framing to clothing. His independent label and house appointments consistently used tailoring, school uniforms, and graphic imagery to document youth identity and alienation.

Born in Neerpelt in 1968, Simons graduated with a degree in industrial design in 1991. He began his career designing furniture for galleries and private clients. Following an internship at the studio of Walter Van Beirendonck, he transitioned to fashion. Encouraged by Linda Loppa, head of the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he launched his eponymous menswear label in 1995. During this early period, he also designed the menswear collections for the Ruffo Research incubator for the Spring/Summer 1999 and Autumn/Winter 1999–2000 seasons.

Simons temporarily closed his company in 2000 to serve as head professor of the Fashion Department at Vienna's University of Applied Arts, a position he held until June 2005. He reopened his Antwerp-based brand in 2001. To mark its tenth anniversary, he published the book “Raf Simons Redux” and presented the retrospective installation “Raf Simons 1995-2005” at the Giardini di Boboli in Florence. In July 2005, he was appointed creative director of Jil Sander, designing womenswear for the first time while expanding the German house's minimalist structures.

In April 2012, Simons became artistic director of women's haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories at Christian Dior, replacing John Galliano. His debut July 2012 couture collection was documented in Frédéric Tcheng's 2014 film “Dior and I”. Alongside his house appointments, he established independent collaborations. This included opening standalone stores in Tokyo and Osaka in 2008 with artists Sterling Ruby and Roger Hiorns, and a long-running footwear project with Adidas that began in 2013 to rework performance running structures.

Simons left Dior in October 2015 and relocated to New York to serve as chief creative officer of Calvin Klein from August 2016 to December 2018. His work there earned him both the Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year titles at the 2017 CFDA Awards. On April 2, 2020, he joined Prada as co-creative director, sharing equal creative input and decision-making authority with Miuccia Prada. Their first joint collection, Spring/Summer 2021, debuted in September 2020. Following this appointment, Simons announced the closure of his namesake label on November 21, 2022. The brand concluded with the Spring/Summer 2023 collection after 27 years of operation.
